Senator John Curtis, a U.S. Congressman representing Utah’s 3rd district since 2017, used his social media platform on January 15, 2026, to advocate for greater accountability from technology companies regarding their use of algorithms.
In one post, Curtis stated, “Last year, I introduced the Algorithm Accountability Act that will let Americans harmed by algorithms finally have their day in court. Tech companies need to be accountable for the product they have created.” (January 15, 2026).
He continued his criticism of social media firms in another message posted the same day: “It is clear social media companies prioritize profit over people’s wellbeing. Too many algorithms are intentionally designed to keep you engaged, enraged, and addicted. Without bold action from Congress, companies will continue to be unaccountable for algorithms’ potential” (January 15, 2026).
Curtis also directed followers to a recent Senate hearing where he questioned industry representatives: “Watch my full line of questioning at today’s @SenateCommerce hearing:” (January 15, 2026).
John Curtis has served as a member of Congress since replacing Jason Chaffetz in Utah’s 3rd district in 2017. Born in Salt Lake City in 1960 and currently residing in Provo, Curtis graduated from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1985.
