Rep. John Curtis introduces bills targeting social media impacts and IP theft

Rep. John Curtis, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing Utah’s 3rd district, has been active on social media discussing recent legislative efforts. Curtis, who has served since replacing Jason Chaffetz in 2017, has focused on issues related to social media's impact on children and intellectual property theft.

On January 30, 2025, Rep. Curtis expressed his concerns about social media's effects on children's mental health and well-being. He stated: "As a father and grandfather, I’ve witnessed firsthand the impact social media has on our children’s mental health and well-being. That’s why I joined my colleagues in introducing bipartisan legislation to limit harmful algorithms and enforce a reasonable age threshold to use..."

Continuing his discussion later that day, Curtis elaborated on the purpose of the proposed legislation by stating: "The Kids Off Social Media Act isn’t about taking something away, it’s about giving kids back their childhoods and protecting their development during these critical years."

Later in the day, Curtis introduced another piece of legislation targeting international intellectual property issues. He tweeted: "Today I introduced legislation that directly punishes Chinese individuals, companies, and organizations who steal American IP and puts pressure on the CCP to stop its widespread trend of IP theft and replicating U.S. technologies."
